Coronado surfing association (CSA) was founded on the principal that surfing and the ocean is a special experience that is worth preserving and enjoying with family and friends. Whether you’re a novice or a life long surfer, you’ll find in CSA fun loving people of all ages who love to surf, respect the environment, and have fun in and around the ocean.

We host several surfing and social events throughout the year. We welcome local Coronado surfers and those who make Coronado part of their surfing routine. We also invite those who live out of town and make Coronado part of their beach experience. (For more information please click “how to join.”) Please enjoy our website more fully and we hope to see you at the beach!

About Our Club

The CSA is all about our love for surfing and the ocean environment. Like minded people who want to have fun together pursuing this passion are welcome to join our group. We believe that surfing and the ocean is a special experience worth preserving and we have lots of fun doing it. Whether you’re a life long surfing or a novice you’ll find in CSA people of all ages who love the beach. We meet every other month to discuss association business, perhaps view videos of a recent surf trip, or listen to a “living legend” guest speaker.

Coronado Surfing Association wants to “make a difference.” We participate in regular beach clean ups, help families less fortunate in those third world countries we surf in and much more. We are a 501c non-profit corporation that distributes aid to international environmental groups working to preserve our ocean environment. We give a yearly scholarship to a deserving surfer student to help with their higher education. We help support the Coronado Middle School surf club and the Coronado High School Surf Team. (for more information on making a donation to these worthy causes click on “donations”) For information about joining our group please click on “how to join.” Whether you want to learn to surf or are a seasoned “pro” we think you’ll like what we do at CSA.

Remember, surfing and a clean beach environment is worth protecting the world over.

Message from the President

My Fellow Surfers,

The end of 2007 was made spectacular with all of your help at the Jimmy Reilly Longboard Classic. I'm sure most poeple agree there was a very special vibe in the air that day. The surf was great, the surfers were “on” and the music was groovy.

It was an honor to have 3 time world champion and surfing ambassador Nat Young show up to watch his daughter Nava surf in the women’s event. Thanks Nat, for the impromptu stretching exercise with the groms and the expert commentary on the mic. Also gracing us with his presence and surfing was “Mr. Pipeline” himself… John Peck, former Coronado resident and surfing icon. Also, number 3 in the world, longboard champion Taylor Jensen was on hand once again to award one of his own boards to the youngest surfer in the event. Thanks as always Taylor! And no, Mike, I haven’t forgotten you! Ladies and Gentlemen… the legend… Mike Dobranski showed up! It was really good to see you! Tom Keck, for my money the best surf photographer on the planet, always shows up to help, thanks TK. Tim Cousins, resin art master and film maker… shaka bra! JR’s brother Mark Dean… always colorful. Mega developer and north shore pioneer Tony Falletta… good to see you back in the water. Mike Spence, thanks as always for your judging skills, and I love your new book! I’d also like to welcome new members Fred Holmshaw, Hugh Mellon, Kenny Walker, and the Falletta family to the club. By the way, Fred has left his boogie board in the sand and returned to an upright position after a 35 year hiatus. (He’s back on a longboard!) Thanks to our many sponsors such as Emerald City, Hobie, Reef, and many others. (Click on “sponsors” to see a list of very helpful people we couldn’t live without.) Finally, City of Coronado… you guys are awesome!

So… now its 2008… we have recovered from the holidays and are ready to have another great year of surfing camaraderie. Can you say “double overhead?”… yes please! I have heard some great stories from many of you, including Craig getting robbed by pirates in the Mentawais as Tom, Jack, Lorton, Chris, and Taylor surf it up. Gillem went to Costa Rica and Nicaragua while good big waves formed at Rincon, Sandspit, Sloughs, and Swamis… we’ve gotten some great surf!

I’m looking forward to continuing our quest for a clean beach and healthy ocean, while at the same time, helping those less fortunate in beach communities around the world. I want to continue spreading the word that surfing is the fountain of youth. It’s a great sport and a great way of life on so many levels. So… let's keep it positive, keep it fun, and be sure to share the waves… they belong to everyone!

See you in the lineup!!

Your President,
Alec MacKenzie
